I started out reading genfic and het. I started with Labyrinth and Princess Bride fanfic, I don't even remember how, back in the mid-/late-90s. I didn't really get that fanfic was a thing until later.
I started reading hp fanfic about the time I started reading hp, which would have been just about the time book 4 released. Again, I went primarily to gen/het because that seemed what was most readily available.
As for slash, I had a friend send me In The Shadow of His Wings back when it was just a few chapters and I was all like "what do you mean Harry and Draco?" And she was like "NO READ THIS TRUST ME" And I did so I did and the rest is history.
I've fallen out of fandom, gone years not really reading, even dabbled in other fandoms for a few months at a time, but I can't imagine spending the time reading, writing or enjoying another ship or fandom as much.
